Up Close with Cindy Cederlund
Movie Marker Magazine got up close with supermodel Cindy Cederlund to talk modelling for some of her favorite brands and what she has in common with ‘Sex in the City’s’ Carrie Bradshaw.
You’ve been a successful model for a while, do you have a favorite type of modelling?
I enjoy every type of modeling and I consider a good shooting day when I’m working with talented creatives. I love doing runaway modeling because of the action, the music, and the excitement backstage. The fast-paced environment is challenging, and I love it! Print work that uses brands that focus on the face. I feel that I’m good at creating feelings and changing energy through the eyes and my head position. I also really love hand-modeling because all I have to do is to show up on set with beautifully moisturized hands!
What brands have you enjoyed being part of, and why?
Mac, because they use incredible make up stylists! The make-up artists are incredible at changing looks from shot to shot with the use of colors and applications which inspires me a lot as a model to feel beautiful, unique, and creative throughout the photoshoot.
The better the artist is that works on you with styling, make-up, and hair, the more unique and inspiring your look might be. However, in the end, what matters the most is the relationship between the model and the photographer because together they can create the right emotions to generate beautiful shots.
What are some of the highs and lows you have experienced on set?
The highs are definitely when you get to keep the products!
The lows… well, working on a commercial set is all about teamwork and sometimes productions get slowed down because something isn’t working out. It could be for different reasons such as the lighting, the script, models are late, director is not feeling well, the producers are indecisive, the client is not satisfied with the shots. Anything can happen. And when it does … then everything on set becomes delayed which can result in long waiting times and people can get frustrated.
As a runway model, who have you enjoyed wearing the most?
It’s really not about the collection you are wearing. So many of the collections and so many of the shows are stunning. It’s just a complete feeling of freedom and artistry when you are on the runways in any collection you are given. Although sometimes you’ll have a beautiful collection, but the production will put you in an outfit that is not your favorite. That can be a bummer!
Do you have a favorite designer?
Oh … there are so many!! I love designers that embrace feminine curves from Jean Paul Gaultier, Gianni Versace, Azzedine Alaïa to Tom Ford, Olivier Rousteing and Peter Dundas. My ultimate favorites are Chanel, Dior and Givenchy for its elegance, refinement and sophistication and Dolce & Gabbana for its richness, colors, and extravagance. And of course, Karl Lagerfeld is an absolute icon. They are all my favorites!
What’s one item of clothing you love to wear the most?
Dresses! I love wearing dresses! I love vintage boutiques. My favorite one is Aralda Vintage on Beachwood Canyon in Los Angeles and the other one is Loverslane in Notting Hill, London. They both have a beautiful selection of unique pieces from runaways in the 90’s such as Alaia, Thierry Mugler, Gianni Versace, Vivien Westwood, Issey Miyake, Alexander McQueen etc.
Handbags or shoes – which do you have more of in your wardrobe?
Definitely shoes!! I’m obsessed with shoes! Carrie Bradshaw (Sex in the City) and I have that in common. I love buying shoes and The RealReal website hasn’t helped with my addiction. And when I’m about to travel I can spend hours brainstorming on which pair of shoes to take with me, but I still end up buying a new pair of shoes wherever I go.
Do you have a bucket list of fashion designers you would like to work with?
I would love to work with Burberry and Coach and on runaways for Tom Ford, Ralph Lauren, Marc Jacobs, Donatella Versace, and Roberto Cavalli.
Many models have transitioned to movies. Have you ever considered acting?
I have been asked to figure in movies because filmmakers like my foreign accent but quite frankly, I love being in charge of a creative project and really enjoy producing films.
When you are not working, what do you enjoy doing?
I love reading and writing. But mostly being with my family and friends. I find these are the people who are such a great source of happiness and inspiration. I love them! I enjoy the camaraderie and the work that builds self-growth and development which helps me in all aspects of my life.
What can we expect to see you doing over the next few months?
A lot of travelling is on my agenda. Mostly in Europe for work with the upcoming fashion weeks and then to Rwanda where my mother is originally from, because I’m on the board of the foundation “Rwanda Rocks Music Schools” and it’s time for me to go there and give them some love and support.
How can people find and follow your journey?
I’m not very active on social media because I’m usually too busy working but Instagram is a good place to start.
