The Most Unpredictable Oscars Ever?
We have only had six awards so far this evening, but already it is turning into one of the most unpredictable Academy Awards of all time.
It started very much as expected, with Mahershala Ali taking away best supporting actor for Moonlight, but that is pretty much where the formalities ended. La La Land has had three opportunities to win so far but remains empty handed as Hacksaw Ridge won sound mixing, but missed out on sound editing to Arrival.
Costume design was expected to go to either Jackie or La La Land but instead went to Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. This was not expected, though many in hindsight will say we should have seen it coming for Colleen Atwood.
Then there’s hair & makeup. Star Trek Beyond was the clear favourite to win here, but somehow, inexplicably, it went to one of the worst rated movies of 2016 – superhero flop Suicide Squad.
It begs the question: what the hell is going on this year?!
With many categories yet to be announced, it is not a good omen for La La Land who can no longer even equal the record number of Oscars won, with just ten possible awards remaining. It also gives hope to Arrival in other categories such as film editing and cinematography, in which it was all but ruled out before the show started.
Quite how the rest of the awards will pan out will be clear soon, but if things continue in the same vein that they started it will be arguably the most bizarre Oscars we’ve ever seen.
