Disney have let the force go to their heads this week, as we have been swamped with news about the upcoming sequel. First it was the announcement that open auditions will be held throughout the UK in November for two lead roles in the new movie. There is more info including character specs on the BBC News website, but Only Oscar will be bringing you a feature and photos from the London auditions as we attempt to win the parts of Rachel and Thomas. We assume these are temporary names.

And then Disney revealed the planned release date as December 18th 2015, so only 2 years, 1 month and 9 days to wait. Exciting! But also important to note is that all previous Star Wars movies were released in the third or fourth week of May, so the decision to move the new trilogy to December puts it in the ranks of The Hobbit and The Hunger Games, and signals a new blockbuster Oscar contender, or ‘blockboscar’, That doesn’t work. We can probably say with confidence that Disney have their eyes as much on awards as they do on the box office, so expect a lot of talk about the technological achievements required to make it, with a real promotional focus on these qualities to assert itself in the technical categories.

What do you think of the release date and open auditions? What do you think the name of the new movie will be? Do you even like Star Wars?
