Spidey Reboot Draws Audiences Into Its Web!
With the benefit of opening on a Tuesday, Marc Webb’s reboot ‘The Amazing Spiderman’ scored one hefty box office opening this week. With Andrew Garfield stepping into the suit left by Tobey Mcguire, the latest installment comfortably took over the reins from Seth Mcfarlane’s ‘Ted’ soaring to the top spot taking $140 million ($65 million taken between the traditional Friday-Sunday period).
Putting these figures into perspective with the Raimi directed entries, Webb’s just falls short of the 2002 original ($144.1 million) with the sequels well ahead. Number 2 scoring $180.1 million and the critically maligned third film accumulated $176.2 million respectively. With a trilogy in the pipeline, Sony will certainly be satisfied with such an impressive start..
This weekend also marked the return of Oliver Stone to the director’s chair. His latest project ‘Savages’ starring rising stars Taylor Kitsch (John Carter) and Aaron Johnson (Kick Ass) had a healthy opening in fourth position ($16.1 million). Spare a thought for music superstar Katy Perry though. Her 3D documentary ‘Part Of Me’ had to settle for $7.1 million at number 8.
Here’s the weekend rundown:
1. The Amazing Spiderman $65 million (6 day haul $140 million)
2. Ted $32.5 million
3. Brave $20.1 million
4. Savages $16.1 million
5. Magic Mike $15.6 million
6. Tyler Perry’s Madea’s Witness Protection $10.2 million
7. Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted $7.7 million
8. Katy Perry ‘Part Of Me’ $7.1 million
9. Moonrise Kingdom $4.6 million
10. To Rome With Love $3.5 million
