Saoirse Ronan and Margot Robbie Are Royal Rivals In ‘Mary Queen Of Scots’ Trailer

Both women started the year with much deserved Best Actress Oscar nominations for their stellar performances in Greta Gerwig’s ‘Lady Bird’ and Craig Gillespie’s ‘I, Tonya’.

Perhaps we’re speaking too soon. But on the judgment of the engrossing debut trailer for ‘Mary Queen Of Scots’, we would not be surprised if Saoirse Ronan and Margot Robbie are in the running once again come 2019, as it tackles the fascinating relationship between Mary Stuart (Ronan) and Elizabeth I (Robbie) as the former looks to overthrow her cousin.

The film is directed by Josie Rourke whose great experience in the National Theatre productions of Les Liasions Dangereuses and Saint Joan seems to serve her well here, with its lavish and elegant production value. ‘Mary Queen Of Scots’ which also stars Jack Lowden, Joe Alwyn and Gemma Chan is released on 18th January 2019.

“Mary Queen of Scots” explores the turbulent life of the charismatic Mary Stuart (Ronan). Queen of France at 16 and widowed at 18, Mary defies pressure to remarry. Instead, she returns to her native Scotland to reclaim her rightful throne. But Scotland and England fall under the rule of the compelling Elizabeth I (Robbie). Each young Queen beholds her “sister” in fear and fascination. Rivals in power and in love, and female regents in a masculine world, the two must decide how to play the game of marriage versus independence. Determined to rule as much more than a figurehead, Mary asserts her claim to the English throne, threatening Elizabeth’s sovereignty. Betrayal, rebellion, and conspiracies within each court imperil both thrones – and change the course of history.’
