Pacific Rim Sequel On The Way!
Its original instalment from last year’s batch of Summer blockbusters starring the likes of Idris Elba and Charlie Hunnam, proved one of the most fiercely divisive films of its type in recent times. Some compared it to the visual mayhem of Michael Bay’s ‘Transformers’. Others deemed it a glorious B-movie that left you feeling 12 years old again.
Director Guillermo Del Toro has often had trouble green lighting follow-ups for his more spectacular efforts. You only have to look at the difficulty he’s endured trying to wrap up a planned ‘Hellboy’ trilogy with regular collaborator Ron Perlman. However, after much speculation and confirmed via a special video message by the man himself, ‘Pacific Rim 2’ IS happening.
Making the switch to Universal after Legendary ended its partnership with Warner Bros, the script for the latest Kaiju/Jaeger ‘smackdown’ will be penned by Travis Beacham and Zak Penn. In a further development, Del Toro has confirmed that an animated series is also in the works and likely to surface before the sequel hits the big screen.
It’s no secret that in the US and taking into account its $190 million budget, ‘Pacific Rim’ was ultimately saved by its international gross of $309 million, in comparison to its domestic taking of $101.8 million.
‘Pacific Rim 2’ will hit cinemas on April 7th, 2017!
