Movie Marker’s Favourite 2024 Films With Sparkling Wine Pairings
Happy New Year! You might have seen our 2024 film round up where some of the Movie Marker team listed their favourite films for this year. Hopefully, some of these films might be ones that made you curious enough to add to your watch lists!
As the New Year arrives quite quickly, you might wish to celebrate whilst watching a film or two! As we all know, New Year’s Day can be a bit quiet after the annual New Year’s Day Swim, run or watching the New Year’s Day concert! Therefore watching a film during such moments could be the ideal pastime whilst opening a bottle of fizz!
To help your New Year entertainment options and celebrations, here are a handful of the top films that were popular amongst the Movie Marker team with a sparkling wine pairing that we’ve chosen!
Dune: Part Two
Sit down to watch this cinematically breath-taking, entertaining, compellingly dazzling and emotional sequel with a glass of Aldi’s Specially Selected Crémant du Jura.
Directed by Denis Villeneuve, who is French Canadian, a glass of this viral, intriguing, tasty crémant will pair quite nicely. Dune Part Two is Villeneuve’s unique, mesmerising interpretation of the classic desert based tale, with superb performances from its cast, and equally this aromatic, fruit forward crémant offers its own spin on the traditional champagne method.
Challengers
Disrupting the status quo, the sensual Challengers was another firm favourite amongst the Movie Marker team. Zendaya delivers an electric performance as she places herself at the centre of a love triangle within the sweaty world of tennis.
As tennis and champagne typically go hand in hand, we would combine watching this gripping sports drama with a glass of Pommery Brut Royal champagne. This champagne combines those brioche flavours with green apple to provide that fresh, flirty flavour that ideally complements the tone of Challengers!
Wicked
Wicked burst onto the cinema screens as an energetic adaptation of the beloved stage musical show which provides that backstory to the Wicked Witch of the West. With toe tapping musical numbers and a heart tugging emotional performance from Cynthia Erivo, we would pair watching this with the Rathfinny Rosé English Sparkling wine.
This Sussex sparkling wine is fun, smooth tasting and pink, just like a key colour within Wicked. Plus, it is British just like main star Cynthia Erivo for another matching connection.
Sing Sing, The Wild Robot and Conclave
These next three films received the same score from our team and therefore we have placed them together for this next pairing. The complex dynamics within these films will keep audiences enthralled with their examinations of the relationship dynamics between prison inmates within an acting group, a robot and members of the animal kingdom and groups of priests electing a new pope.
We would pair these films with a glass of Cap Classique and the Graham Beck Blanc de Blancs would pair nicely. It is made from 100% chardonnay grapes and is creamy and packed full of flavours just like these three films!
Anora
Mikey Madison delivers a tour de force performance in Anora in this rags to riches tale which subverts the classic fairytale with its gritty settings. It is another favourite from the Movie Marker team and would pair this with the Codorniu Grand Reserve rosé. Cava might often be forgotten about within the options for celebrations with sparkling wines. But, just like Ani in Anora it deserves to be taken seriously. This rosé version from Codorniu has a prominent red fruit flavour with a smooth finish to appeal to many whilst watching Anora.
