Godzilla-2014-Full-Monster

An iconic monster that along with his respected fan base, still bears the scars of a misguided 1998 attempt under the disaster-weary eyes of director Roland Emmerich. It was left to Warner Bros and an up-and-comer in ‘Monsters’ helmer Gareth Edwards to breathe new life into ‘Godzilla’.

Garnering far more favourable reviews in the process, the 2014 ‘rebirth’ proved a roaring success at the US Box Office this past weekend. Already garnering half of its $160 million budget back on home turf, the film starring ‘Breaking Bad’s Bryan Cranston and ‘Kick Ass’ Aaron Taylor-Johnson had little difficulty securing the top spot, with a healthy taking of $93.1 million. In comparison to its critically mauled predecessor of sorts, it grossed more than double than Emmerich’s effort ($44 million).

Elsewhere, ‘Bad Neighbours’ and ‘The Amazing Spiderman 2’ held reasonably well in their second and third frames, completing the top three with $25 and $16.8 million respectively. Whilst the other new entry this week, Disney’s sports drama ‘Million Dollar Arm’ starring Jon Hamm landed in fourth position ($10.5 million).

Here’s the rundown in full:

1. Godzilla $93.1 million

2. Bad Neighbours $25 million

3. The Amazing Spider-Man 2 $16.8 million

4. Million Dollar Arm $10.5 million

5. The Other Woman $6.3 million

6. Heaven Is For Real $4.3 million

7. Rio 2 $3.7 million

8. Captain America: The Winter Soldier $3.6 million

9. Legends of Oz: Dorothy’s Return $1.9 million

10. Mom’s Night Out $1.7 million
