There just seems to be no stopping the animated production juggernaut that is Disney. Not so long ago, they merged together with the studio of comicbook giant Marvel. Now in a remarkable turn of events, they have officially announced they will be buying director George Lucas’ studio Lucasfilm.

In a deal that will be in the excess of $4.05 billion dollars in cash and stock, the move will prompt new installments of a much beloved sci-fi franchise. Of course, we’re talking about Star Wars. The prequels may not have received much praise, but Episode 7 has already been set a tentative release date of 2015 with Disney planning to produce a new entry every 2-3 years.

Remaining on board with the franchise as a creative consultant, Lucas stated:

‘It’s now time for me to pass Star Wars on to a new generation of filmmakers. I’ve always believed that Star Wars could live beyond me and i thought it was important to set up the transition during my lifetime.’

In more reshuffles, Kathleen Kennedy who is the current co-chair of Lucasfilm, will make the step up to President and report to Walt Disney Studios chair Alan Horn in relation to the cash and stock transaction.
