This weekend, it was the playful bromance of Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill’s crime-busting Jenko and Schmidt, taking on the animated might of DreamWorks as they unleash a hotly anticipated sequel.

Considering it didn’t have the luxury of being able to hit such a broad demographic, ’22 Jump Street’ took many by surprise this weekend in the US by landing the top spot. A follow-up which has proved a worthy exception to the barrage of disappointing comedy sequels in recent times, the film scored an impressive $57.1 million in its opening weekend, $21 million up on its predecessor.

Despite falling short of box office supremacy, ‘How To Train Your Dragon 2’ followed in the footsteps of ’22’ by improving on its beloved original. Landing in the runner-up spot, the film boasting the voices of Jay Baruchel and Cate Blanchett opened with $49.4 million, a reasonable jump from the first film’s $43.7 million opening bow.

In a weekend which saw last week’s heartfelt champion ‘The Fault In Our Stars’ starring Shailene Woodley tumble to fifth position with $14.7 million, it was left to Angelina Jolie’s ‘Maleficent’ to complete the top three, gaining $18.5 million in its third week of release.

Here’s the rundown in full:

1) 22 Jump Street $57.1 million

2) How To Train Your Dragon 2 $49.4 million

3) Maleficent $18.5 million

4) Edge Of Tomorrow $16.5 million

5) The Fault In Our Stars $14.7 million

6) X-Men: Days Of Future Past $9.8 million

7) Godzilla $3.3 million

8) A Million Ways To Die In The West $3.2 million

9) Bad Neighbours $2.3 million

10) Chef $2.1 million
