With his fondness for gritty gangster fare such as Lock, Stock and Two Smokin Barrels and Snatch and the mixed fortunes of his re-imaginings of Sherlock Holmes and this Summer’s King Arthur: Legend Of The Sword starring Charlie Hunnam.

Director Guy Ritchie remains a rather unlikely choice by Disney to helm a live-action version of Aladdin, as it looks to emulate the 1992 animated version.

Nonetheless, it has been confirmed at Disney’s D23 expo who will be taking on three of the key roles. First up, Ritchie has opted for a relative unknown in Mena Massoud to play Aladdin as Naomi Scott who was a part of Dean Israelite’s Power Rangers this year, will be playing Jasmine.

Along with the news that has already sparked fierce debate. The Fresh Prince himself Will Smith (Suicide Squad) will be bringing his larger-than-life persona to The Genie, a much adored character previously played by the late comedic genius Robin Williams.

Production is set to begin next month in London, with Frankenweenie’s John August providing the screenplay.
