Saoirse Ronan and Margot Robbie Are Royal Rivals In ‘Mary Queen Of Scots’ Trailer

Published

on

Both women started the year with much deserved Best Actress Oscar nominations for their stellar performances in Greta Gerwig’s ‘Lady Bird’ and Craig Gillespie’s ‘I, Tonya’.

Perhaps we’re speaking too soon. But on the judgment of the engrossing debut trailer for ‘Mary Queen Of Scots’, we would not be surprised if Saoirse Ronan and Margot Robbie are in the running once again come 2019, as it tackles the fascinating relationship between Mary Stuart (Ronan) and Elizabeth I (Robbie) as the former looks to overthrow her cousin.

The film is directed by Josie Rourke whose great experience in the National Theatre productions of Les Liasions Dangereuses and Saint Joan seems to serve her well here, with its lavish and elegant production value. ‘Mary Queen Of Scots’ which also stars Jack Lowden, Joe Alwyn and Gemma Chan is released on 18th January 2019.

“Mary Queen of Scots” explores the turbulent life of the charismatic Mary Stuart (Ronan). Queen of France at 16 and widowed at 18, Mary defies pressure to remarry. Instead, she returns to her native Scotland to reclaim her rightful throne. But Scotland and England fall under the rule of the compelling Elizabeth I (Robbie). Each young Queen beholds her “sister” in fear and fascination. Rivals in power and in love, and female regents in a masculine world, the two must decide how to play the game of marriage versus independence. Determined to rule as much more than a figurehead, Mary asserts her claim to the English throne, threatening Elizabeth’s sovereignty. Betrayal, rebellion, and conspiracies within each court imperil both thrones – and change the course of history.’

It’s Paratroopers Versus Nazi Zombies in ‘Overlord’ Trailer

Published

We’re ensured this is not another elaborate scheme to expand the Cloverfield universe by producer J.J Abrams, after The Cloverfield Paradox was released on Netflix earlier this year without little warning.

But the frentic ‘Overlord’ trailer set to AC/DC’s ‘Hells Bells’ certainly has us intrigued, providing us with an undead take on the horrors of World War II as a team of paratroopers led by Wyatt Russell find themselves behind enemy lines, only to uncover that the Nazis are conducting scientific experiments to create zombie-like super soldiers.

Directed by Son Of A Gun’s Julius Avery. The film is released in the UK on 25th October.

Powerful Debut Trailer For Joel Edgerton’s ‘Boy Erased’

You wait for one film to tackle the despicable concept of gay conversion therapy (The Miseducation Of Cameron Post). Then two come along at once. Yet it is far from a case of diminishing returns for Joel Edgerton’s latest directorial effort, with his adaptation of Garrett Conley’s book ‘Boy Erased’ shaping up to be a heart swelling affair.

‘Erased sees Lucas Hedges’ Jared struggling to articulate his attraction toward men within a fiercely religious home, with Nicole Kidman and Russell Crowe his on-screen parents. Faced with being disregarded by his family after coming out, he is forced into a church-supported conversion program which only leaves him more determined to remain authentic.

Also starring Mommy director Xavier Dolan and singer Troye Sivan, with the trailer featuring his new track ‘Revelation’. The film is released later this year.
