It seems that Charlize Theron’s successful turn as Furiosa in Mad Max: Fury Road will see the character return as Australia’s Herald Sun newspaper is now reporting that the supposed prequel is already in development.

Nothing is confirmed at this point and a few reasons cast doubt on the report, mainly that Fury Road director George Miller, expected to be returning to the helm of his post-apocalyptic franchise, has stated in interviews that, should he direct another “Mad Max” movie, it won’t be until he’s done something else first.

The Herald Sun is saying that the untitled prequel “will be filmed in and around Broken Hill,” an area in New South Wales, and that shooting “could start as soon as later this year…The script is said to focus on the backstory of Furiosa, played by Theron, rather than Tom Hardy’s title character.

“Mad Max: Fury Road,” which made $378 million worldwide, was arguably even more successful with critics and awards bodies than it was with audiences — Miller’s fourth entry in his iconic series was nominated for 10 Oscars (including Best Picture and Director; it won six technical awards).
