During an interview with IGN on the Westworld red carpet, filmmaker J.J. Abrams revealed that his ‘Portal’ and ‘Half-Life’ movies are still in the works.

“[Both films are] still very much in development,” he said. He added that we should hear more about the ‘Portal’ movie very soon. “We have a meeting coming up next week with Valve, we’re very active, I’m hoping that there will be a Portal announcement fairly soon.”

The videogame ‘Portal’ became a huge hit back in 2007 which saw its silent protagonist Chell attempting to escape from a testing facility run by the maniacal artificial intelligence, GLaDOS.

Of course, the game was so successful that it spawned an even more popular sequel, with Steven Merchant providing the voice for the new character, Wheatley. Its mix of hilarious comedy and physics-bending puzzles was a huge hit for Valve… so perhaps it was inevitable to find a movie soon in the works.

But will the films follow on from the in-game stories?

“We are having some really interesting discussions with writers, many of whom…once you said you’re doing a movie or show about a specific thing that is a known quantity you start to find people who are rabid about these things. As someone who loves playing Half Life and Portal, what’s the movie of this, it’s incredible when you talk to someone who just ‘gets’ it, it’s like, oh my god, it’s really the seed for this incredible tree you’re growing.”

When will the big ‘Portal’ announcement happen?

For now, we’ll have to wait and see.

Let’s just hope GLaDOS doesn’t hold a grudge over that whole potato thing.
